The design of the TCU was created by the United
States Navy’s Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) for the
Federal Aviation Administration’s Security Integrated Product
Team (SEIPT), and is licensed by NABCO for manufacture.
Designed to be used together with explosives detection equipment
during screening, the TCU can safely contain the detonation of
an improvised explosive device (IED) inside a piece of passenger
luggage. For mobility, it can be mated to a two-piece transport
conveyance, consisting of a terminal cart for use inside the
facility and a road cart for use on the road.
The TCU provides a valuable option for
facilities where an FAA-approved design is critical, and its
FAA-approved design can help speed funding through the Airport
Improvement Program (AIP).
Highly Customizable Suspect Luggage
Containment Vessels (SLCVs)
Some customers will require more flexibility and
a greater range of sizes than the TCU can provide. And for those
customers, NABCO provides its line of Suspect Luggage
Containment Vessels (SLCVs). Unlike the TCUs, SLCVs feature an
electronically-operated door for easy operation. Screeners
simply place the suspect device within an SLCV, and close the
door with the push of a button. With the SLCV's built-in X-ray
capability, arriving bomb squad members can use standard
portable X-ray devices to image a suspect device while it
remains safely contained within the SLCV. And the SLCV’s reduced
size allows for deployment within “in-line” screening operations
for checked luggage — a growing concern.
What's more, the SLCV can be customized to meet
unique needs. Optional explosive, radiological, chemical and
biological sensors can be integrated to allow users to quickly
identify if a “live” device is inside the unit, while the X-ray
capability allows users to obtain details of the device. Other
options include a programmable logic control for robotic
operation, a vapor hood for protection from biochemical hazards,
and RF shielding to protect against remote detonation by cell
phones or other devices. The unit can also be customized to meet
specific size and access requirements, explosive capacities, or
to integrate with in-line baggage systems.
